Ready for the in-house analyses de GDGTs!

Our laboratory at IRNASA CSIC is ready for the analysis of isoprenoids and branched GDGTs via UHPLC/QTOF.

GDGTs are membrane lipids produced by archaea and bacteria, and can be found in marine and lake sediments and peat and soils. Their production is strongly influenced by ambient temperature (continental or marine) and soil pH, making them a valuable tool for reconstructing these variables over time! Moreovero, GDGTs are also a powerful tool for studying the microbial communities that produce them in soils and sediments!

The fourth CLIVAR publication by the network of Spanish scientists is out!

The study highlights the rapid decline of the cryosphere in the Iberian Peninsula, the accelerated warming of ocean waters, and the effects of climate change on the country’s geography and climate.

Blanca Ausín is one of the lead authors of chapter 1: Atmospheric and oceanic changes since the last glacial maximum: Review of proxy-based and climate model simulation reconstructions in the Iberian Peninsula. This chapter summarizes the information necessary to contextualize current climate change in the Iberian Peninsula.

Nadee Nanayakkara starts a research stay at ETH Zurich

During a 3-month research stay, Nadee will work closely with 3 different research groups: Biogeosciences, Climate Geology, and Earth Ecosystem Dynamics. Nadee’s research will focus on exploring signals associated with all sorts of lipid biomarkers that provide ecological information about their precursor organisms. Her stay is funded by a Judith McKenzie Visiting Early Career Researcher Fellowship.

PASSAGE24 comes successfully to an end!

Ours are the first sediment traps ever recovered from the SW Iberian margin&Shacketon Site.

Thanks @ERC_Research @CSIC @utm_csic @IEOoceanografia @irnasa_csic and the great crew&team onboard for making this scientific challenge possible!

Visit to the Ocean China University in Qingdao

Blanca Ausín was invited by Prof. Rui Bao to visit the Ocean China University with the aim of establishing collaborations. Blanca also participated as invited speaker at the “2024 Intern. Forum on Carbon Neutrality” and multiple seminars for PhD students. Thanks to our Chinese colleagues for their warm welcome!

Research Stay at Barcelona University

Prabodha is on a 1-month stay supervised by Dr. Leopoldo Pena to analyse the neodymium, strontium and lead isotopes in her samples.

The results will help us decipher the origin of the hydrodynamically sorted lithogenic material.

Nadee Nanayakkara participates in 2k Network workshop by PAGES

The workshop “Global-scale hydroclimate synthesis of the Common Era” was held at the University of Nottingham on the 9 -12 of September 2024 and had to objectives:

– Reconstruct spatial and temporal hydroclimate variability and change over the Common Era from local to global scales.
– Evaluate and constrain Earth system models using hydroclimate proxy data, whilst using models to inform process-level understanding of Common Era hydroclimate.

Blanca Ausín completes a 3-month research stay at IPMA, Lisbon

During her stay at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, Blanca learnt from the experts of the Marine Geoly Division and the Group led by Dr. Fatima Abrantes

Nadee Nanayakkara is awarded the Judith McKenzie Fellowship

The Judith McKenzie Visiting Early Career Researcher Fellowship  is awarded by the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences of ETH Zurich, and funds 3-month research stays to foster scientific interactions, develop broader research networks, and ultimately to help improve gender representation in our community

You can touch it!

We successfully completed the fieldtrip associated with the 2nd Postcruise Meeting IODP Exp. 378 held in Zumaia (Basque Country) on the 20-21st July, 2023.
We visited several Eocene stratigraphic sections guided by the expert Dr. Aitor Payros (UPV/EHU) and enjoyed the geological jewels of the Basque Coast Geopark, which is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Network.

We were right at the K-Pg, but the meteorite didn’t catch us this time!
